      Homeostasis

In 1968, neuroendocrinologist Bruce McEwen and his research team at Rockefeller University in New York discovered the profound impact of stress on the brain.

Their groundbreaking discoveries, which were published in the journal Nature, revealed how stress disturbs the body’s homeostasis, or balance – increasing something they coined “allostatic load” – or the wear and tear from being chronically stressed out.

It is possible to reverse allostatic load and bring about a state of homeostasis.

With rose geranium, clary sage and myrrh, and palmarosa, The Quietude is a therapeutic essential designed to alleviate stress and enhance a sense of stability at the day’s end when you’re fatigued from work or family life, or in need of repose.

The Quietude lives up to its name, helping you wind down, recalibrate and find a moment of calm, even after a busy day.

      Formulation

Organic Myrrh Commiphora myrrha (Somaliland) is one of the oldest known medicines used therapeutically for its healing, antimicrobial activity and grounding, meditative scent.

Wild-harvested Palmarosa (Cymbopogen Martinii) has a soft, rose-like aroma and is rich in linalool, which along with geraniol, calms anxiety, enhances delta brain activity (associated with slow-wave sleep) and soothes away emotional and oxidative stress.

Organic Rose Geranium Pelargonium x asperum (Madagascar) is especially high in geraniol, which has a harmonising, balancing effect, calming the nervous system and alleviating restlessness and anxiety.

Organic Clary Sage Salvia sclarea (France) is abundant in linalool and linalyl acetate, giving it calming, mood-enhancing and sleep-promoting properties, and the ability to relieve stress and systolic blood pressure.

      How to use

Diffuse: Add a few drops into one of Appellation’s stone diffusers and diffuse throughout the area during evening wind-down rituals.

Pulse points: Place a drop or two on your pulse points or the palm of your hands. Rub your palms together, cup your hands, and inhale deeply.

Add a few drops of The Quietude to a natural carrier oil and add to a warm bath, use in a soothing, fragrant massage, or wear as a perfume.

      Buying Handmade

For small-scale, home decor artisans, their brands are their livelihoods and it reflects in the care that they take to hone their craft and produce something of real value. When given a choice between something that has been churned out by a machine in a factory and something that was beautifully crafted in someone’s garage, more consumers are opting for the latter. Every choice we make with regards to how we exercise our buying power, makes a difference.
